3D pipe run measurement in practice

Gain of information from inspection and geodetically accurate position measurement of sewer systems.

The extensive project was launched in Zimmerschied, one of 19 localities in the Nassau municipality with a population of 100.

Challenge

Only analogue plans were previously available for the sewer system of the small village of Zimmerschied, located on the southern slopes of the Westerwald at an altitude of 460 m above sea level. The documentation referred mainly to the main sewers in the public area, the location of which was relatively well known from manhole measurement and camera inspections. No information was available in the construction records about the number, condition and location of laterals.

Solution

Starting from the main sewer, the 3D-GeoSense lateral inspection and measurement system was used to inspect and record the run of the pipe in a single operation. Where necessary, the results of the 3D pipe run measurement was verified by an additional hydrostatic height measurement. This is a method that determines the elevation of sewer systems with an accuracy of ± 1 cm.

Result

The geodetically accurate position survey of the wastewater facilities made a valuable contribution to economical and sustainable rehabilitation planning. The pipe run measurement provided xyz coordinates of the pipes, thus completing the information on the inspected sewer system. The generated site plan of the ramified laterals makes its easier to locate the pipe for possible rehabilitation measures or other structural planning.
